Some interesting comments from the stadium owner:
"I still think Wigan rugby now could be more generous in what they do, and how they help to pay for the running of the stadium – especially the pitch. I am in talks with Ian Lenagan right now over that very thing. More money has got to be spent on the ground and on the playing field. It’s being subsidised by me a hell of a lot. They obviously don’t play as many games on it as Wigan Athletic. But the stadium is in constant use, and it’s very difficult to keep the pitch up to the level we want it at. It’s essential we keep that to the highest level. All I am saying is Wigan rugby have to contribute a bit more financially to the upkeep of the stadium."
The end of year accounts for Wigan Warriors show that in 2014, £279,381 was paid in stadium rental costs. 17 home fixtures were played at the DW, 2 of which were challenge cup games and 2 were play-off games. In 2015, £322,824 was paid in stadium rental costs. 17 home fixtures again took place, but one cup tie was played at Leigh and one was the WCC, leaving 14 league fixtures and one playoff game.
As I understand, all WCC and play-off games are RFL events, with ticket prices set by the RFL and as such the RFL would meet the cost of stadium rental.
By my maths, we paid £18,625 per league/cup game in 2014 and £23,058 per league game in 2015 - a rise of 24%, yet Mr Whelan thinks we should pay more for the privilege of being told when we can and cant play.
Nowhere can I find as to how much rent the Latics paid to play their 23 league games, 2 FA Cup games, 3 UEFA cup games, one playoff and one friendly in 2013/14. Nor could I find details as to how much they paid to play their 23 league games and 2 pre-season friendlies in 2014/15.
Perhaps next time the WEP journo gives DW a platform, he could ask him as to how much the other tenants pay to have first call and double use of the same facilities.

| Have a look at the accounts for Wigan Football club (the old Welco). Those are the accounts for the stadium, corporate, rental, functions etc They are the stadium owners, not Wigan Athletic.
Those who think that owning a stadium is the be all and end all will see that the Stadium company is losing money.

Its a good job the council have waived their £205,000 ground rent every year so far or uncle Dave would really be squealing!

| Did those comments come straight from Dave, or via his carer?

| I assume the current contract will have no clause for cost of upkeep therefore, if uncle Dave wants to change the contract then IL can take the opportunity to change or amend other clauses.
Uncle Dave must be the only owner in the world of a sporting club with a statue outside his ground who genuinely begrudges spending money on the club. Never sure if I feel sorry for him or if he deserves my total apathy.
