| As rated by the Aussies...

Good to see a couple Brits make the top 10 too...even if one of them has defected to the other code!

| Some weird placings.
Monaghan better than Hall?
Chris Hill better than Roby?
Morgan Escare... lol
If Tomkins is 61st then Charnley shouldn't be 62nd. Tomkins and O'Loughlin should swap places to be honest.

It's based on the 2014 seasons and personally I'd agree with all of the above with the possible exception of Hill better than Roby. However, that's just opinion and Hill has certainly deserved to be spoke about in those terms as evidenced by his MOS nomination alongside Roby. It's interesting too that, despite our view of Tomkins, it's always O'Loughlin who the Aussies rave about. There's so many who have said that he's a cut above that it can't be coincidence. Hoffman tweeted that he should be in the top 10 (never mind 31st) only recently and Michael Dobson rated him the best player he'd EVER played alongside! Maybe the Aussies have a different viewpoint on what makes a great player than the typical UK view?

I am not surprised Hoffman said that. Some players just rise to the challenge of a higher level of competition and although Lockers has had his international appearances curtailed by injury in the past whenever he has played he has looked fantastic and a cut above certain other players with a reputation in particular Sinfield. Sinfield is a great SL player and club man but he isn't international standard and never has been. It is late in the day for Lockers but I am glad he has the honour of captaining England. He deserves it.

Very true Dave. I think it's also very rare, even in world terms, to find a player that essentially has it all and I think this is what stands out to the Aussies. Most players, no matter how good, have weaknesses but this is not the case with O'Loughlin. He's as effective doing the basics as he is, say, putting in a 30 yard cut out pass on the run and that is more unusual than you would think. Even many world class players aren't able to do this. Sam Tomkins was mentioned earlier in this thread and though he's undoubtedly capable of moments of genius, he's equally capable of making the wrong decision or looking shaky in defence for example. Even someone rightly regarded as one of the best players in the world (and no.3 on this list) Sam Burgess doesn't have the best passing game and a pretty much non existent kicking game. That's not to say that both these players don't do what they do to a remarkable level. I just use these examples to illustrate how unusual it is to be the 'complete package'.

I would rather have lost Tomkins than O'Loughlin from Wigan.

I'm very surprised to hear that from a Wigan fan.
O'Loughlin is invariably injured where as Tomkins was invariably a match winner.
O'Loughlin has many very good qualities as a player and a leader but is no good sitting in the stands.

I think most would disagree with him to be honest. I certainly would given O'Loughlin's age and injuries. It's a moot point of course as there was no way we could hope to keep Sam

Tough question, if they were the same age I'd take SOL as he effects everything we do. That being said, SOL would have to be the player he is now, not the player he was in his mid 20s as his leadership and overall game has improved a lot. Offer me SOL as the player he has been for the last few seasons in his mid 20s and tell me he will be here until he retires, I'd take that over Sam.
